Axis Pad Controller

June 15, 2007, 5:58PM · Matthew Callis

I wanted to take a stab at learning how to write a basic USB driver for Mac OS X and the only USB device I had at the time was an old Axis Pad controller. The Axis Pad was a great controller, and still is. It requires a Serial -> USB converter if you don't have a serial /controller port (MacBook...) and I happened to still have mine, and the key chain that came with it. I based the controller off the XBox 360 driver for OS X.

After reading through and understanding just what was going on. Once I got a good understanding I started making the appropriate changes. One issue I ran into was tracking the controllers output, for which I had to find a Windows computer to trace the output. Once I got that down I was quickly able to code the output over and got the controller working exactly as it should.

The Axid Pad has has it's own HID, and doesn't really need its own driver to work (in most programs). I wanted to simply learn how to get a USB controller working in programs in OS X.

Now I am working on a driver for the now defunct KB Gear's Little Tikes 3D Cruiser.
